The medical name given by the doctors for acid reflux in infants is GER or gastroesophageal reflux. This can be defined as the condition where the food stuffs present in the stomach along with the acid in it tends to return back which is also known as reflux. This takes place more often in infants and it flows back to the esophagus coming out through the mouth in most of the cases. LES or Lower esophageal sphincter is known to have a ring of muscles located at the end of esophagus and they are on the duty of opening and closing of this for the food to enter into the sac. The same also opens its mouth to leave out the gas which occurs after each meal.
Apart from gas, what happens is that LES sometimes allows the contents of stomach to flow back into the esophagus which comes out through the mouth. This is mostly refereed to as acid reflux in infants and it can also come out as vomit and almost all the parents might have experienced this problem with their infant. It happens mostly immediately or just after feeding and can sometimes result due to excessive crying, shaking, coughing.
Spitting up is the name given for acid reflux in infants and the best and the simple solution to solve it is to pat on the back of the baby immediately after feeding. There are many parents who get worried over this issue and ask for treatments. The truth is that, this is also referred as happy spitters and just wades away after around 14-16 months of the baby. Treatment is needed only if the case is severe and when the child keeps on doing the same and cries out without being calm.
